RTCA/DO-160 Testing

Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment

RTCA/DO-160 Testing has been the standard for environmental testing of airborne equipment since 1958. For commercial applications, the "FAA strongly encourages the use of RTCA/DO-160 for new articles" (Source: FAA Advisory Circular).

Section 8.0 of the standard is specific to the use of Vibration Testing to demonstrate that installed equipment complies with performance and durability requirements.

Test Selection

Vibration test profiles are defined using three identifiers: (1) aircraft type, (2) test category, and (3) aircraft zone location.

The Aircraft Types are defined as:

  • Fixed-wing Propeller
  • Fixed-wing Turbojet
  • Fixed-wing Turbofan
  • Fixed-wing Propfan
  • Helicopter

The Test Categories are further defined by the following groups:

Standard Vibration Test

  • Category S - Fixed-wing aircraft undergo 1 hour/axis of sine, or random at performance level.

Robust Vibration Test

  • Category R - Fixed-wing aircraft undergo 3 hours/axis of sine less 30 min dwell(s), or random for 30 min at performance level, followed by 3 hours of endurance, followed by 30 min at performance level, for all three axes.
  • Category R or U - Helicopter undergo 1 hour/axis of sine at endurance levels plus dwells and 30 min performance test at begin and end of test for all three axes. Test is repeated three times for U category.
  • Category U2 - Helicopter undergo random for 30 min at performance level, followed by 3 hours at endurance level, followed by 30 min at performance level, for all three axes.

High Level-Short Duration Vibration Test

  • Category H or Z - Fixed-wing aircraft undergo high g/low frequecy sine sweep for each axis.

And, the Aircraft Zone Locations are defined as:

  • Fuselage
  • Instrument Panel, Console & Equipment Rack
  • Nacelle & Pylon
  • Engine & Gear Box
  • Wing & Wheel Well
  • Landing Gear
  • Empennage & Fin Tip
